Short answer: Returning to Canada after medical school abroad is linked to very different chances of matching back into a Canadian residency. In the 2026 CaRMS match, IMGs from schools in Oceania (mainly Australia and New Zealand) had the highest match rate, 76.3%. The rate was 65.9% for Europe (including Ireland and the UK) and 36.6% for Central America and the Caribbean (CaRMS 2026 match data). Whichever region you choose, the route home is the same: CaRMS as an international medical graduate, with the MCCQE and the NAC.
This guide is for Canadians deciding where to study medicine abroad, or already there and planning the way back. Figures checked against CaRMS, MCC and Australian health department pages on Sep 29, 2026.

Read these numbers carefully. They cover every IMG from each region, not only Canadians. CaRMS doesn’t publish a separate rate for Canadians who studied abroad. A Canadian from a region with a low rate isn’t doomed, and one from a high-rate region isn’t guaranteed a place. But the gaps are large enough to take seriously when you’re choosing a school and planning on returning to Canada after medical school abroad.
Timing matters too. In the first iteration of the same match, IMGs who graduated in 2026 matched at 80.6%. Those who had graduated in earlier years matched at 47.8% (CaRMS). Whatever you choose, plan to apply in your final year.
What’s the Same Wherever You Study When Returning to Canada After Medical School Abroad
- You apply as an IMG. CaRMS sorts applicants by where they earned their degree, not by citizenship. You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to apply (CaRMS eligibility).
- You need the MCCQE, and in most provinces the NAC. Every province requires the MCCQE, and every province except Quebec requires the NAC. Saskatchewan accepts USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 in place of the MCCQE, Nova Scotia/New Brunswick/PEI accept USMLE Steps 1 and 2, and Newfoundland and Labrador accepts MCCQE Part II or the LMCC in place of the NAC (CaRMS: MCC exam requirements).
- Your school must be acceptable to the MCC. That means a World Directory listing with a Canada Sponsor Note (MCC eligibility). Check this before you enrol, not after.
- Some Provinces Add Their Own Assessments for Returning to Canada After Medical School Abroad. BC (UBC Clinical Assessment Program), Alberta (Alberta International Medical Graduate Program) and Quebec (recognition of M.D. degree equivalence) each require a provincial process before you can apply through CaRMS (CaRMS eligibility).

Australia and New Zealand
This region had the highest IMG match rate in 2026. OzTREKK, an agency that places Canadians in Australian schools, reports that Canadian graduates of Australian schools had an 81% match rate in 2025, citing CaRMS data (OzTREKK). Read that as a recruiter’s figure; CaRMS’s own 2025 match rate for all Oceania/Pacific Islands IMGs was 80.6% (CaRMS).
The catch is the internship. For Canadians planning on returning to Canada after medical school abroad, Australian states guarantee intern places to their own citizens and permanent residents first. In New South Wales, graduates who aren’t Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents sit in Priority 4 or lower, behind every domestic group, and only Priority 1 is guaranteed (NSW Health priority list, 2027). Queensland works the same way: international graduates are in Groups C and D, which aren’t guaranteed an offer (Queensland Health). If coming home is the plan, CaRMS is your main route, not a backup.
Ireland and the UK
Ireland has one of the largest groups of Canadian medical students abroad. For those planning on returning to Canada after medical school abroad, the MCC says more than 1,200 Canadians are studying at Irish medical schools in 2025/2026 (MCC: Returning home). A group that size means there are usually students a year or two ahead of you who can advise you.
The same MCC article describes the cost: Irish-trained graduates can carry upwards of $300,000 in debt, compared with an average of $164,000 for graduates of Canadian medical schools. It also describes the workload of preparing for Irish finals alongside the Canadian and US licensing exams. Irish and UK schools fall in the Europe group above, 65.9% in 2026.
Continental Europe
English-language programs in countries like Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic are also counted in the Europe group. That group is the largest, with 505 IMG participants in the 2026 match. Check each school’s World Directory listing for the Canada Sponsor Note. Also check how its clinical years line up with the MCCQE and NAC calendar, since you’ll need both done before your final-year file review.
The Caribbean
Caribbean schools had the lowest IMG match rate in 2026, 36.6% across 227 IMG participants. Some schools publish their own Canadian results. St. George’s reports 16 CaRMS matches in 2026, up from 8 in 2025 (SGU). Many Caribbean students apply to both CaRMS and the US match, which means writing the MCCQE and NAC as well as the USMLE.
