The short answer:
- Say you need an accommodation in your exam application, then email the MCC’s request form and your supporting documents to candidateaffairs@mcc.ca as soon as possible after you apply.
- For the MCCQE, allow up to 9 weeks of processing, and do not book a standard Prometric appointment first.
- For the NAC, each session has a fixed test accommodation documentation deadline.
- A granted accommodation covers one exam only. You ask again with every new application.
If you need extra testing time, extra break time, assistive equipment or a personal item such as a breast pump on exam day, the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) can change how your exam is delivered. It calls this a test accommodation. The process for MCCQE and NAC test accommodations follows a similar outline, as does the process for the TDM Examination, but the timing rules differ, and the timing is where most requests go wrong.
This guide sets out what the MCC asks for, when to send it, and a working timeline for each 2027 MCCQE session. Every rule below comes from the MCC’s own pages, linked in each section and read on 4 October 2026.
Understanding MCCQE and NAC Test Accommodations
The MCC defines a test accommodation as a modification to the standard administration of an exam “to address a human rights-related functional limitation”. Whether you receive one depends on the nature of your functional limitations and accommodation needs, the documentation you provide, and the requirements of the exam (MCC test accommodations).
The examples the MCC lists are additional testing time, break time, and access to assistive equipment, assistive personnel or personal items (for example, breast pumps). A scheduling conflict is a different matter: for the NAC, the MCC handles it through a separate scheduling request deadline (MCC NAC scheduling).
Documentation Checklist for MCCQE and NAC Test Accommodations
For MCCQE and NAC test accommodations, the MCC asks for the following documents along with the completed Request for test accommodations form:
- A detailed personal statement describing your functional limitations and the accommodations you need.
- A signed, dated letter or report on official letterhead from a treating medical professional qualified to evaluate your limitations. It must describe your limitations and needs in the context of the exam, and give specific recommendations with reasons. If you are asking for extra time or break time, it must state the exact percentage of extra time or the exact number of minutes.
- An update if the letter is old. If the document is dated more than two years ago, a new letter from a treating medical professional must confirm that the limitations are still present and note any change in your needs.
- Proof of earlier accommodations, if you have any, on official letterhead, from your school’s accessibility office, another testing organization or your clinical training program.
One detail about MCCQE and NAC test accommodations is easy to miss. The MCC notes that needs may differ between a computer-based exam (the MCCQE or the TDM) and an OSCE (the NAC). A letter written for your MCCQE will not automatically fit the NAC, where you move between stations and examine standardized patients. If you are writing both, ask your clinician to address each format.
MCCQE: the 9-week rule and the Prometric trap
Three MCCQE-specific rules shape your timeline (MCC: test accommodations for the MCCQE):
- An application with an accommodation request needs up to 9 weeks to process, counted from when you have met every eligibility requirement and the MCC has your documentation. Requests are reviewed first come, first served.
- The accommodation must be granted by the MCC and programmed with Prometric before you can book. You will get a message in your physiciansapply.ca account when you can schedule. If you need wheelchair access, you book by phone with Prometric’s test accommodation team.
- Accommodations cannot be added to an existing standard appointment. If you ask after booking, you will be told to cancel and rebook once the request is reviewed.
That last rule has a cost. Prometric charges $35 plus HST to cancel 31 or more days before your appointment and $75 plus HST inside 30 days. Cancel less than 120 hours before, and you forfeit your application fees (MCC: MCCQE scheduling). So if you think you may need an accommodation, ask first and book second. Note too that remotely proctored MCCQE appointments are no longer offered; every appointment is in person at a Prometric centre.
A working timeline for the 2027 MCCQE sessions
The MCC says appointments can be scheduled 5 months before a session starts, and it encourages candidates who need accommodations to apply early so they can book in their preferred session. The table below works backwards from the 2027 session dates. The last column is our own arithmetic, not an MCC deadline: it is the date by which a complete request would clear the full 9 weeks before booking opens.
| 2027 session (MCC) | Booking opens (about 5 months before) | Complete request in by (9 weeks earlier) |
|---|---|---|
| 19 January – 11 February | open as of 26 August 2026 | about 24 June 2026 (passed) |
| 27 April – 1 June | about 27 November 2026 | about 25 September 2026 (passed) |
| 10 August – 7 September | about 10 March 2027 | about 6 January 2027 |
| 5 – 26 October | about 5 May 2027 | about 3 March 2027 |
How to read it. “Passed” does not mean too late. Nine weeks is the maximum, and a session runs for weeks after booking opens, so a request sent now can still land you a seat in April 2027. What it does mean is that you are no longer first in line for dates and centres, and the MCC states that appointments supporting accommodations are subject to availability. If a result deadline matters to you, such as a CaRMS file, aim for the earlier column. Our MCCQE 2027 dates guide covers the sessions and results timing in more detail.
NAC Examination: a hard documentation deadline
The NAC works differently because it runs on fixed exam days at assigned centres. You can send your documents until the session’s test accommodation documentation deadline, and the MCC warns that an accommodation may not be possible if documents arrive after it (MCC: test accommodations for the NAC Examination). For the 2026 sessions, the MCC listed these dates (MCC NAC scheduling):
| NAC session | Application closed | Accommodation documents due | Exam date |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 2026 | 10 December 2025 | 6 January 2026 | 2 May 2026 |
| September 2026 | 25 March 2026 | 22 May 2026 | 19 and 20 September 2026 |
The gap between the application deadline and the documents deadline was 27 days for May 2026 and 58 days for September 2026. Treat it as time to finish paperwork you have already started, not time to start it. Book your clinician’s appointment before the application window opens.
Centres matter more for the NAC. Not every centre can deliver an accommodation that changes the standard administration, and the MCC reserves the right to assign you to a centre and date that can. That may mean travel and related costs. Plan your budget with that in mind; our NAC OSCE dates 2027 guide has the wider session calendar.
How MCCQE and NAC Test Accommodations Are Approved
For MCCQE and NAC test accommodations, approval comes only after three steps: your exam application has been accepted, the MCC Test Accommodations Internal Review Committee has reviewed your request, and the MCC has coordinated the accommodation with the exam provider. You are told the details through physiciansapply.ca.
If you did not flag the need in your application, your request is treated as late. The MCC reviews late requests at any time, but it does not guarantee them. And because a grant is valid for one exam only, a candidate who writes the MCCQE, then the NAC, or who resits, sends a new request each time.
A decision rule you can use today
- Do you have a functional limitation that affects how you sit a timed computer exam or an OSCE? If yes, plan on a request. If you are unsure, ask your treating clinician before you apply, not after you book.
- Is your clinician’s letter less than two years old and specific to this exam’s format? If not, get a new one with exact minutes or percentages.
- MCCQE: apply, indicate the need in your application, email the documents, and wait for the physiciansapply.ca message before you touch Prometric.
- NAC: diarize the documentation deadline the day the session’s dates are posted.
MCCQE and NAC Test Accommodations FAQs
How long does an MCCQE test accommodation request take?
Up to 9 weeks, counted from when you have met every eligibility requirement and the MCC has your supporting documents. Requests are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis (MCC: test accommodations for the MCCQE).
Can I add an accommodation to an MCCQE appointment I already booked?
No. Accommodations cannot be added to an existing standard appointment. If you ask after booking, you will be told to cancel the appointment, then send your documents, and you can schedule a new appointment once the request has been reviewed (MCC: test accommodations for the MCCQE).
What documents does the MCC need for a test accommodation?
The completed Request for test accommodations form, a detailed personal statement, and a signed, dated letter or report on official letterhead from a treating medical professional that describes your limitations and needs in the context of the exam and gives specific recommendations with reasons; if you are asking for extra time or breaks, it should state the exact percentage of extra time or minutes of break time. A document dated more than two years ago needs a new letter confirming the limitations are still present, and if you have had accommodations before, the MCC asks for proof of them (MCC test accommodations).
When is the NAC test accommodation deadline?
Each NAC session has its own test accommodation documentation deadline. For 2026 it was 6 January for the May session and 22 May for the September session; the MCC had not posted 2027 dates when we checked on 4 October 2026 (MCC NAC scheduling).
Does an approved accommodation carry over to my next exam?
No. Approved MCCQE and NAC test accommodations are are valid for one exam only, so you send a new request with each future exam application, including a resit (MCC test accommodations).
Practise at the pace you will sit
If extra time is part of your plan, practise under the timing you expect to receive. The MCCQE has 230 multiple-choice questions in two sections of 115, with up to 2 hours 40 minutes per section at standard time (MCC: the MCCQE); our post on how long the MCCQE exam is breaks the day down. Working through realistic question sets at that pace builds the stamina the day needs. To start, try 30 free questions in mccQbank.
If a rule here does not match your situation, ask the MCC directly at candidateaffairs@mcc.ca before you apply.
